CA
- All class tests & assignments such as workbooks / worksheets / practicals = 100m

SA
- Common test (40m) + Coursework (60m) = 100m

Failure to submit / complete a certain section / assignment will result in a deduction of marks.

Sec 1s Practical Exam

Please take note that the practical exam will be held during the 1st week of term 4 i.e. the week between 8th - 12th Sep (during curriculum hours).

You are required to buy & bring all the required ingredients. Also bring all your practical items i.e. apron, tea towel, dish cloth & container(s).

You will be graded based on the following criteria:-

Organisation (of time & space allotted)
Management (of ingredients & equipment)
Product & presentation (dish/dessert answered the coursework question, it is well prepared, cooked & served)

You are encouraged to try out your dishes at home. This will enable you to obtain valuable feedback from your family members (who have tasted it). You can thus improve on it accordingly.

Serving plates are available but you may bring your own. Remember that a photograph of this dish / dessert will be taken so a good presentation is crucial.

Sec 1 Coursework - RESEARCH & DECISION MAKING

RESEARCH

This is a gentle reminder for all that the deadline for research (6-8 pages in total) is due next week (18th - 22nd Aug).

Research may be either hand-written / type-written. Remember to include reasons for any diagrams / pictures. You are also reminded to keep to task i.e. all research must be related to the original task question. Information that is unrelated will be disregarded. This is called 'focused research'.

DECISION MAKING

You may choose to "invent" your own recipes. Do not choose complicated recipes due to the restriction of preparation, cooking and serving time. Seek advice from your peers and family members with regards to your ability to prepare and serve a certain dish / dessert before choosing it for the practical exam.

It has also come to our attention that many of you do not understand the requirements of the dish / dessert. This is a repeated statement. You are to choose ONE FRUIT AS THE MAIN INGREDIENT. All other ingredients may be "side-kicks". 2 examples are shown below:-

Example 1: Strawberry milkshake

Main ingredient - 5 Strawberries

Other ingredients - milk, low-fat ice cream, a spritz of lemon to add tanginess to the drink

Garnish - A sprig of mint leaf, a strawberry and a slice of lemon

Example 2: Flambe peaches with ice cream

Main ingredient - 1 peach

Other ingredients - low-fat ice cream, chocolate sauce

Garnish - a sprig of mint leaf and a slice of frozen peach

Sec One Coursework - Decision Making

Hi all,

Please take note that in the midst of completing your research, you may want to look for some suitable recipes for your coursework. Bring at least 4 recipes with you during the final week of term 3 (25th Aug to 29th Aug) to make things easier & faster for yourselves.

Some guidelines on choosing recipes:

The main ingredient MUST be a fruit (relook at the original task given). You may use other fruits to add colour & texture.
The total cost should not be more than SGD$2.00
The recipe must be HEALTHY! (check original task)
The recipe must be simple & fast because you will have to prepare, cook & serve this ON YOUR OWN. You will only be given 30min for this task. After which, a photograph of your dish will be taken & pasted in your main coursework.
Think about the different garnishes / decorations you may want to put onto the plate / dish to make it look interesting.

Always ask your teachers for help if you do not understand the procedure / requirements.

Take note of the task question:

Using only 1 type of tropical/temperate fruit, prepare, cook & serve an interesting and healthy dish or dessert that does not cost more than $2.00.

Work that you may complete at home:
Listing the key words / phrases & explaining how each is important. You must include minimum 4 reasons / explanation. Please refer to your own mindmaps for more information.

Look up on websites that have related information. Some websites are given on the main page of the website. Research may either be manually written / type-written.

Take note that for every keyword / phrase identified, 1 full page of information / research must be completed. You may include definitions / meanings, questions (with relevant answers), examples and even suggestions. Relevant pictures / photos (with explanation) may also be included. An example is shown below.

Bananas are a type of fruit that is grown in tropical countries including Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Bananas are high in potassium that is said to prevent the onset of heart diseases. They also contain soluble fibre that aids in the prevention of high blood cholesterol & high sugar levels in the body.

Only include relevant information. All other information will be disregarded.
